Welcome to CS 598 X1: Human-Computer Interaction and Human-AI Interaction!
This course serves as a introductory class of HCI research and methodology, situated within the context of contemporary AI. We will establish foundational knowledge regarding the scope and goals of HCI, including qualitative and quantitative research methods. Concurrently, the curriculum integrates the latest technological paradigms, moving beyond traditional user interfaces to explore the challenges and opportunities of emerging topics like Human-AI Interaction (HAI), immersive computing, and agentic systems.
The course structure integrates three modules: (1) Research Topics (Seminar), a seminar-style module examining foundational HCI themes and emerging AI frontiers through lectures, presentations, and discussions; (2) Methods, covering diverse HCI research methods, including qualitative, quantitative, and prototyping techniques through weekly lectures and hands-on activities; and (3) Project, a semester-long research project where students apply these methods to investigate a novel problem, culminating in an original research paper.
